Earth Day

Earth Day

Earth Day—April 22—marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda.
Earth Day had reached into its current status as the largest secular observance in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year, and a day of action that changes human behavior and provokes policy changes.

In MOJU we also take care be recycling and attention to the amount of materials we use!

At the end of the every week we go with the kids to throw the recycle garbage in the right place.

How You take care about saving the earth?

Here some tips:

Dia Internacional dos Monumentos e Sítios

Dia Internacional dos Monumentos e Sítios

On Saturday we attended a cultural event in Faro, a historical tour visiting a several baroque style churches.

Our guide talked us through this type of architecture and paintings.

Afterwards, we went to Faro’s museum and listened to Fado music (typical Portuguese music).

Before coming back home, we had the chance to go and try traditional cheese, wine and pork.

Wonderful day with good music and learning about Algarve's architecture!

Project in Alte

Project in Alte

We spent two days in Alte, a beautiful little village, with another young association from Loulé.

We had time to discover the place, do many different activities inside and outside, and bond with everybody involved.

Moreover, it gave us the opportunity to participate in a project with the community of the village. We planted and watered plants and flowers all around, in honou to a man who used to do this.

Amazing place with great and welcoming people.

Trip to Spain

Trip to Spain

Living in Olhão also gives you the opportunity to spend a few days in the south of Spain!

We visited three cities in the region of Andalucía. Our first stop was Granada’s old town, museums and the beautiful Alhambra.

Afterwards, we went to Cordoba. Where we met an Arabic and European mixed culture.

To finish our journey, we spent three days in Sevilla where we met some friends who showed us around their city and took us to good restaurants.

We wondered all around these cities, exploring and enjoying the architecture and nature. We took a lot of pictures of this beautiful place!

Road trip around Portugal

 Road trip around Portugal

We made the most out of our holidays renting a car, going all the way up north through the countryside and coming back near the coast.

In only a few days, we met all four seasons of the year and we were able to do many things like; camp, explore castles, swim in Roman thermal baths, wonder around cities, have a coffee at the beach…

… which gave us the opportunity to discover this county’s culture, gastronomy, and beautiful well known and hidden places.

It was a fun and crazy trip!

Intercultural night!
 Meeting Greece

This month, it was the Greek volunteer’s turn to present their country’s culture, history, etc.

It was interesting and fun…

… and after the presentation, we were able to taste various traditional Greek dishes.

We were happy to have the chance to share this night…

… with the MOJU team and some friends. Waiting for next month’s Intercultural night, when other volunteers will share with us the country they come from!

On arrival training

On arrival training

We took the road from Olhão to Viseu, excited to spend a week there for our program. Every new volunteer has to go to an on arrival training to complete our knowledge about EVS, to get to know other volunteers and to learn more about non formal education.

We had three awesome trainers, who prepared many activities and dynamics for us: our and our organization’s introduction, sharing our thoughts and what we had experienced since we came to Portugal, acquiring general and specific knowledge regarding our volunteer work, etc.

We had the chance to cooperate and show what we can offer and discover Portugal’s and Viseu’s culture.

Spending so many hours together and sharing a lot of great moments made us bond with EVS volunteers all around the country.

It was also an awesome opportunity to wonder around this beautiful city and to visit the Cathedral, the museum, parks…

We had a great time and we learn a lot, it went by too fast!
